About Cresco Academy

Cresco Academy aims to offer entrepreneurs, emerging, growth and established companies and the investment community in general, with a unique learning and networking platform to share experiences and knowledge, as well as to build durable networks.

As a matter of principle Cresco Academy always involves experienced industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and investors in workshops and training sessions. For this event, Cresco invited Folke Lemaître (CEO of Engagor, a Ghent-based start-up which closed a substantial Series A investment round in 2013) and Renaat Berkmoes (partner at the venture capital fund Fortino and former CFO of Telenet) who brought their personal views and insights to the table during an in-depth discussion with the participants.

The Imec entrepreneurship workshop

During an interactive three-hours  workshop, aspiring Imec technology entrepreneurs received an intensive and practical course from Folke Lemaître, Renaat Berckmoes and several accomplished experts from Cresco on key legal and business issues relating to technology start-ups. The entire  workshop was interlaced with real-life examples and practical guidance.

David Maes, venture development manager at Imec states “The Cresco experts have tuned the contents of the workshop to the specific context of Imec. This is not so straightforward because there are multiple links between Imec and its spin-offs: the Imec employees who found the company, Imec as an IP provider, and Imec as an investor. Cresco tackled these different aspects in a very interactive session, which received very good feedback from the participants.”

Practical aspects of starting a technology venture

The first part of the workshop focused the creation and (path to) funding of a  technology venture. Various topics such as valuation principles, term sheet modeling, governance and control issues and human capital retention mechanisms, were treated in great detail.

The second part of the workshop focused on the importance of a clear innovation and intellectual property strategy. The discussion revolved around different ways to set out an effective IP strategy and to build and safeguard an IP portfolio, thus creating long-term enterprise value for the technology venture and its stakeholders.

David Dessers, Pieter Capiau and Magali Feys represented Cresco during this workshop.
